The ‘In Courage’ Newsletter — “Search Management: How to Make the Most of Your Time”
Scripture says, “Be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time” (Eph. 5:15ab).
Learn to include both pro-active and re-active job search techniques to attack the public and hidden job markets.
This is a somewhat un-exciting name for a VERY exciting topic.
Let’s face it. Our job search suffers from (at least) two things:
(1.) Motivationally, you really have a challenge. I know that, for me, it was hard not having work, and the mental, emotional, and even spiritual battles were overwhelming. I did not give up, but most of the time it felt like I was walking through wet sand (or, on a happier note, trying to walk across a room with two giggling toddlers, each one grabbing a leg — c’mon dads, we’ve all done this…) Trouble is, when you’re not working, it’s not like giggling toddlers at all. Just fighting my own inertia, I think I “lost” two hours out of every day! So, being inefficient or ineffective with your time is especially destructive.
(2.) You’re not used to being unemployed, and if you’re like most of us, then you’re not much good at it, either. When is the best time for (yech!) cold calls, or the preferred “warm” calls (ask a Mentor if you don’t know what these are!), or interviews, or visits, or follow-ups, or Informational Interviews?
How can you get the most out of your week once inexperience (2., above) and depression have done their worst? How do you put together the best possible 40 hours per week of job-seeking? (Understand, we Christians don’t get depressed. We just get concerned. Real, real, real, real, REAL concerned.)
Well, no matter how well you think you are doing, I think you’ll get something out of, “Search Management: How to Make the Most of Your Time”.
Next Week: “Networking Strategies: How to Net Work from Your Network”
NETWORKING IS HOW I FOUND WORK AGAIN — AND NOT ANY WORK, BUT BETTER WORK!
It’s true, the grace of God is how I get EVERYTHING.
But if the grace of God is how I live (which it is!) then NETWORKING is like BREATHING.
Definitely attend this week at all costs. This is high octane fuel for your search. Forget all of the negative stereotypes of NETWORKING and all of the gross and “leechy” approaches you’ve ever either used or experienced. CTW networking is much more like finding ways to bring value to others, and bless them, which is, of course, one of the best ways to advertise yourself!
I have listened to this presentation over 10 times, and I am still getting things out of it.
That’s it for this week. And may the God of hope fill you with hope!
All the best,
