The ‘In Courage’ Newsletter: “Interviewing Tactics: How to Promote Yourself”
(Understand the six steps of the interview process. Learn the tools and techniques to apply and improve your chances of positioning yourself as the ideal candidate.)
“Promoting yourself” in the interview is more important than you’d think.
Back before I was a job seeker at Career Transition Workshop, before I learned what you are learning now, my thought was this:
Arrive at the interview and try to answer all their questions. Y’know — get the job!
Well, duh, right?
I didn’t really understand that I wasn’t simply answering questions; I was making a Presentation. I didn’t realize that, of all the people in the room, I was probably the best — maybe the only — one with the qualifications to determine if this new job and me were going to be a good fit.
Okay, let that thought settle in for a second. THEY are doing the interview, but YOU have the knowledge.
YOU have been researching THEM. You have been networking with other people in the company, including their former employees. YOU have been reading articles about them. YOU have been studying them intensely. YOU have done your homework.
THEY have reviewed your resume, maybe checked out your Facebook page, maybe talked with you on the phone, and maybe even reviewed your resume with each other.
YOU have been studying yourself. YOU know your strengths and weaknesses. YOU know where you can contribute, and also where you will be less effective. YOU have already closely examined your fit with THEM.
And one more thing.
YOU have more ownership of the Interview. You remember that last job, and you want this one to work better — and also end better.
THEY are asking the best questions they can think of at the time, and hoping the other people in the interview team will catch anything they missed.
YOU know the questions they SHOULD ask, and are ready to steer the conversation toward those questions.
With all this information, ask yourself this question:
WHO IS THE ONE PERSON IN THE INTERVIEW ROOM with all the qualifications to make sure the interview is done right and gets the right result?
HINT — it’s not THEM.
Your task now?
PREPARE for these six steps in the Interview process:

That would be another great subtitle for next week’s presentation.
• Why were you let go at your last job?
• What are your strengths and weaknesses?
• And those questions about money.
• …and lots of others.
We all dread these questions. They seem like minefields, and we just pray we can get through them without blowing up the interview.
What if we could not only survive these questions, but turn them into positive parts of the interview?
