The ‘In Courage’ Newsletter — this Thursday: “Two Minute / Two Pages Resumes: How to Package Yourself”
Discover the key to not only opening the door, but getting the interview. Learn how to market and sell yourself.
A conversation with a CTW alumnus reminded me of something very important:
If you know the key things that define you, or the three words that describe you, or your five greatest strengths, but they are not shouted out by your Resume and your Two-Minute Elevator Speech, then, ask yourself: “Why?”
(1.) If your Resume bullet points do not provide examples of your strengths, then find examples of your past deeds that do back up those strengths.
(2.) And, if you cannot find bullet points that back up what you think are your strengths, then ask yourself, “Are these really my strengths?”
This is not only important, but it is REALLY important. Why? If what you really feel your Strengths are is not backed up by your Resume, then,
a. You may be looking for the wrong jobs, and
b. The resume screeners and your interviewers will probably see that, also.
The Two Minute / Two Pages Resume process can be a great time of self-discovery, and, for many of us, it needs to be.

“For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?”

Once you know what you can do, you want to make sure that you communicate it in a way that helps you.
For those of us who have not had to wage a coordinated battle using Iron Age technology (a bugle), think of this as an example: What if you had a job offer letter with only one out of every 4 characters visible.
That last sentence would look like this: “Fte wh w oieaeiI ho nfci eio eycaril”
You, as a job seeker, want to make sure that the *way* you communicate in writing helps — and does not hurt — the wonderful *what* that you are communicating. This week is huge in that very arena!
On a personal note:
I must confess that this is one of my toughest areas. There is a proverb, which says,
“He cuts off his own feet and drinks violence
“Who sends a message by the hand of a fool.”
If my writing is sloppy or ill-considered, it’s as if I took my reputation, entrusted it to some idiot, and sent him ahead of me to introduce me. Your written things may be the first impression of you that an employer sees.
Here is something else, too: Your future employer needs someone who can communicate well, even if in just a note or an email. You don’t want to be a foolish messenger!
But there is another proverb,
“Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest
“Is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
“For he refreshes the soul of his masters. “
You want to be this person! Please join us, and learn how to make your words your own faithful messengers!
